The Associação de Beneficiários da Obra de Fomento Hidroagrícola do Baixo Mondego is a Public Utility Entity established in 1988 to manage water resources and distribution within the Baixo Mondego Valley Hydro-Agricultural Scheme. With nearly 2,000 active beneficiaries, it operates, maintains, and preserves irrigation, drainage, and road infrastructures across 10,000 hectares, ensuring an efficient water supply and optimal conditions for agricultural production, while promoting environmental sustainability in the region.
It’s a public entity responsible for the irrigation infrastructure of the Mondego Valley, managing approximately 9,000 agricultural hectares, with a special emphasis on rice cultivation.
The role of this organization is essential for ensuring the participation of Portuguese farmers in behavioral change training sessions. It collaborates in data collection and the implementation of efficient irrigation practices to mitigate nitrate leaching. Within LIFE-NITRAZENS, ABOFHBM will focus on the replication and transferability of the project in Baixo Mondego.
