Working together to improve nitrate management

Participatory workshops:

If you are interested in mitigating nitrate pollution in our rivers and would like to share your experiences, we encourage you to take part in any of the participatory workshops that Life-Nitrazens is organising during the spring months of 2026, with the aim of identifying and implementing effective, feasible and agreed measures among the different stakeholders involved.

Nitrate pollution is one of the main problems affecting water quality in Spain. Thirty years have passed since the Nitrates Directive was incorporated into Spanish law and, despite the regulatory and technical progress made, this issue has still not been significantly reversed.

The persistence of high nitrate concentrations in numerous water bodies highlights the need to strengthen the approaches adopted to date. At the Life-Nitrazens project, we believe it is essential to identify and implement effective, feasible and agreed measures among the different stakeholders involved. We are committed to governance as a key tool for moving towards sustainable solutions, fostering participation, dialogue and shared responsibility.

With this purpose, the Life-Nitrazens project is organising a series of participatory workshops in the Duero, Ebro and Mondego river basins. These meetings are intended as spaces for debate and collaboration, bringing together all the stakeholders involved — public administrations, the farming and livestock sectors, the scientific community, environmental organisations and other social actors — to share experiences, analyse difficulties and compare points of view. The aim is to generate a valuable exchange that helps build realistic and effective proposals to address the challenge of nitrate pollution.

Different ways to participate

If you are interested in contributing but cannot take an active part in the workshops, we invite you to complete this survey, whose purpose is to identify the main barriers faced by each sector in relation to nitrate pollution.
